Balaam was a diviner hired by the Moabites to curse Israel. However, God intervened causing Balaam to do the opposite of what he sought to accomplish – he blessed Israel. As Balaam inadvertently spoke on behalf of the Lord, he prayed these words:

“Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my end be like his!” (Numbers 23:10).

The problem with this prayer, as explained by evangelist Smith Bibens, was that while Balaam desired to die like the righteous he did not seek to live like them. Thus, Balaam’s prayer was vain and useless.
